6:26 am - I know, I work fast
|
The new LJ is at bexfiles. From now on I'll be using that login and that journal. Please update if you want to keep reading my insanely dull comments on life. I promise they'll get more interesting once we're on the road and doing something other than packing, painting and watching TV :-)

5:58 am - Changing journals
|
|
I'm thinking of moving to a new journal, so I can open it up to family and more friends as I go on the road trip. Sooooo... be prepared for this one to die a small death and for a new one to arise from its ashes.

We avoided the Bush speech, after all it's less painful to read a summary on the news pages. It reminds me of the Oxford Union debate where someone said you can make war on an abstract noun (ie. terrorism), but Bush could obviously make a good war on syntax. Ok, so it was a joke designed to make people feel like they wanted to vote with his side, but it actually made me smirk. And I know I should read more about Robin Cook's speech, but then I have to look at photos of him ;p My dad's sending me daily summaries actually, as he's a big political maven - but I'll do another round of reading today.
They cancelled Miracles because of the Bush speech even though it was scheduled for 10pm (and the speech 8pm). That saddens me a lot. They only announced it at 9:55pm, so we were sitting there really excited to watch the next episode and blah, it was moved to next week.
But on better news, we MAY have found someone with VCDs of Brimstone. Yay!

listing books is excessively boring unless you keep a good pace., If you keep stopping for perfect packing it mkes your typist dead bored.
The new hard drive arrived, but a little too headachy to deal with installing it and then Windows, and then everything else I need. Will need to start the day with a final backup of email, etc to the laptop so I can transfer it all back once the new hard drive is up and running. I really really hope it helps - but having a failing hard drive just can't be a good thing, right?
Off to take some headache pills and lie down.

Packing books, oh the joy. Would be better if we didn't have to itemise them for the insurance we'll need to get. So it's a bit slow, but interesting to actually have a record of the books we own.

argh, St Patrick's Day, definitely not leaving the house today - I can't bear all the greenness (we missed St Patrick's Day in the US last year by sneakily flying back to England). It's pinion's fault I even know it's St Patrick's Day. I wish they celebrated St Andrews instead :-)
Will only be watching Miracles on TV too (the trailer for this looked awesome, so I can't wait for this episode). Hoping the new hard drive will arrive because installing new graphics drivers did something funny and now can't get TV working on my machine, can't be bothered to think about it too, not if a new hard drive is imminent and I can deal with it then. As we're taping Miracles to the computer it's semi-important, but we can always tape to video and then transfer when I have it working.

Friends visit went very well, we had some great chatting time, a wonderful Mexican meal and watched a couple of DVDs (Grave of the Fireflies and Repo Man), and then we chatted a lot more. It's just nice sometimes to have visitors that bring us out of our shells a little.
Not much else going on, to be honest. This week we'll pack the rest of the books and take down the bookshelves! After that it's wall-fixing and painting left to go, but we're starting to make some progress.
We're now deciding between a CD/mp3 player and a mp3 player to take on the road trip with us, almost won one of the latter last night on eBay, but didn't quite manage it. Oh well, still have a few more weeks.
My new hard drive should arrive in the next 3 days, will be very glad to have a fully working drive in my computer - I'm blaming all problems on the hard drive at the moment... but that seems reasonable seeing as I keep getting scary warnings to backup and replace my drive!

There's one website I've been trying to get through to for the past 3 days and because it's IP has changed it's just a DNS problem, but it's still really annoying me!

Friends coming round today so should be nice and relaxing, no idea where we'll go to eat with them, but I have a list of places I WANT to go to eat. They're a bit picky (ie. they won't go to anywhere they consider cheap!) so who knows what'll happen. It's weird actually, a lot of Marcus' friends have this mannerism - they won't eat at the places they used to eat as students, as if they want to show they have more money these days, even if the cheap restaurants or deals happen to have really good food. I haven't noticed it with as many of my friends, but that's because most of my friends don't hang out in the towns they went to university in, perhaps. I know if I were in Oxford I'd almost certainly go to any of the places we ate as students, but we mostly cooked, to be honest. Anyway, we've picked some 'proper' restaurants (even though on the cheapish side, cos we don't really want to spend $15/head on food when we'd normally cook), hopefully Mexican, Middle Eastern or BBQ will appeal to them. If not we could be headed anywhere. If it wasn't pre-5am I'd write more eloquently on restaurant snobbery, but I'm too tired to be honest. I don't mind it as much as Marcus, cos he's the great money-saver of the household - but I did find it funny when one of these guys said a place might give them food poisoning when apparently they ate there once a week as students :-)
Got to 50 on DAOC last night with most of my guild there - that was nice, I'm happy. Now I cam bum around until the road trip instead of fretting.
Hrrm, more later or tomorrow - I want to go wake up.

the one thing I forgot to mention about racquetball yesterday is that the ball managed to hit me in the eye, dodging past my glasses to do so. Luckily it hit my nose rather than my eye full on or I'd have a very impressive black eye. Instead I just have a bit of a nasally headache

games should not be able to depress people. I messed up a quest I've been struggling to do for days, and I'm sooooooo depressed I had to switch off.
Good things:
- we got a car adapter thingy for the laptop. Yay. - I kicked butt in racquetball with my largest margin win EVER and some nasty tactics for Marcus to deal with - we have tortilla chips in the house!!!!! - lunch was yummy (lemon pepper cod and garlic mashed potato!)
um, there's lots more no doubt but I'm too depressed right now. Bought myself lovely Fushigi Yugi manga with the money Sarah sent for my birthday and I can't wait to see it. It's a real splurge for me - but I LOVE it. Also heard from Mediablasters that they're sending review copies, praying it's Kenshin, but that's so unlikely it's untrue. Hehe, it's good for the soul to have to buy some anime every so often!

Daredevil was the most boring film I've seen in a long time. And it wasn't the late showing or the nice meal that made me so lethargic - it was simply the plot of the film. Boooooring. The people were all ok in their own right, but there was nothing to particularly care about. Could quite happily never have seen this film and wouldn't recommend it unless you're really desperate to see one of your fave actors who happens to be in it. Blah.
Dinner was gorgeous. We rarely go out, just the two of us and we had a really nice, long chat about the road trip and all sorts of other stuff. Went to be at midnight, woke at 4am. I'm very tired and very teary for no reason. Went onto DAOC, failed a quest so miserably it was untrue, while watching a friend walk it. I feel like a crap player. I really really shouldn't do anything there pre-8am :-)

We're working on my hard drive problem so I'm writing this on the laptop - yay, laptop! Luckily my hard drive is still under warranty and we've backed everything up to the laptop anyway, but now we're just running diagnostics to get the proper error code. To do this involves wiping the drive. Which is a bit of a pain... but oh well.

Today is Jane's birthday! It's very bizarre having a best friend who was almost born the same day as you. Marcus suggested phoning her as a surprise, and I might - it's actually pretty cheap for us to ring the UK. Have to ring my dad too and find out how hospital went yesterday as he's not been doing so well lately (I just don't want to bore everyone with details). An old schoolfriend of mine wants to go visit him, so have to see if he minds at all!

My birthday continued quiet, but nice. People did remember, which was nice and Josh phoned, also nice. Marcus kept offering to cook, but we already had food to be eaten, and we're going our on tuesday, so it was very scaled down. Am VERY looking forward to tuesday.
On DAoC, we were invited to the big, uber dungeon and my guildmaster got me invited even though it was a hunt for 50s only (and I just got to 49 yesterday), so that was nice. Unfortunately, though beautiful, the dungeon is a bit infuriating, with boss mobs that run away, and very little cool stuff dropping (we did get a big glowy trident, that was kind of funky!). It was a good day, just a sloooow hunt.

6:20 am - my least exciting birthday
|
Well, it really is. No post for me, no nothing really. Got my present from Marcus a while ago cos I went ahead and ordered it and we're going for a meal on tuesday, cos that's when my fave restaurant here does the thing I want (Chinese and sushi buffet, rather than one or the other). I'm looking forward to that a lot, but today - blah. I've obviously finally reached an age where it's not normal to celebrate :-)
Dad, Jo & Rob will phone later (already got my present from Jo & Rob too, and dad is absolved cos he always forgets!). Heard from Vic, via dad.
Anyway, we're sorting out the road trip route too, seems that a few states have a hell of a lot we want to see and picking a perfect drive-through is getting to Marcus. We had a long chat about it last night. In fact, I was up to 1am, and look at me, still awake at 6am. It's sick.

Have been swallowed up by DAOC as I near my 50th level (the max possible). So I've not really been up to much. Been mucking around on the laptop, after backing up all my files onto it, also just transferred all my email over, so as from tomorrow I can feasibly take out the failing hard drive and do something about that. Yay - maybe scary startup messages will go away (actually, they bloody better!). The laptop really is lovely, I'm so glad we got it.
Not much else is going on really. My sleep is normalising and I woke at 7am today, very proud about that.
Marcus is working out our exact road trip route at the moment, based on all the things I said I wanted to see, as well as National Parks and friends. We won't get to see everything, of course, but I hope I get a real look at a lot of America, so I can see what all the different places are like. After all, have to know where I'd like to spend more time in the future. Looking forward to it a lot now :-)

Please tell them not to cancel Miracles. While transferring files today I was reading the Miracles forum (which I only just found, cos I never usually go to official sites for stuff) and there's a rumour it'll be cancelled. So not fair as they've messed around with the scheduling so much it's untrue! And it's by far the best show on the TV at the moment - on the channels I get anyway.
I hope it doesn't go the way of Brimstone, and I hope if it does they at least show the rest of the series and consider a DVD release. Bah, I'm so depressed now (as if finding out your hard drive is failing isn't depressing enough)

looks like my primary hard drive is failing. Moving files (which are already mostly backed up) onto laptop. Will have to load OS and work from my spare hard drive it seems. Bummer. Luckily main one is still under warranty, but still! These things should happen to other people.
